Relax, Breathe and Get Married

Crystal Askew & Martin Gray
September 9, 2006
Monticello, Ill.
Guests: 170

Wedding Day Highlights: It helps to have the relaxation skills of a yogi when you’re planning your vegan wedding. Crystal, a yoga instructor, and Marty, a software engineer, say that by going with the flow, they were able to create a restful atmosphere for their guests and, as a result, their wedding flowed smoothly. The love in the air was palpable as the couple celebrated their day in elegant simplicity at the Robert Allerton Mansion, where their guests were able to retreat to charming Victorian rooms after the ceremony, then indulge in a fabulous brunch of vegan biscuits and gravy the next morning. Bride and groom decorated the mansion with just a few wind chimes, some paper lanterns for the outdoor tent, and flower and bamboo bouquets for the tables. “We made it simple,” says Crystal. “We didn’t need the day to be perfect; it was going to be perfect no matter what.”

Their Story: Crystal and Marty met in 1995 when Crystal, a high school freshman, transferred to Marty’s school, where he was a junior. Secretly, they were smitten with each other, but it wasn’t until 2002 that they rekindled their lost friendship and began dating. Shortly afterward, they started planning their future, which includes the mutual dream of starting an organic farm in Central Illinois. Their advice to couples wanting a vegan wedding is not to go against your ethics just because you want to please everyone. “It is your day and you want people to get a real sense of who you are and, more so, who you are as a couple.” [Sutton, this would make a good PULLQUOTE, if you decide to use one]
