Gretchen Schaper & Peter Ryan
July 8, 2006
Acton, Calif. Guests: 150
Wedding Day Highlights: Gretchen and Peter touched many lives when they united theirs. Both volunteer at Animal Acres, a farmed animal sanctuary near Los Angeles, and when it came time to choose their wedding location, the farm was their only pick. They asked their guests to come dressed for a formal affair, but warned that they may get sniffed by a dirty nose. Who could have predicted that a gregarious pig would knock over the wedding planner? Instead of accepting gifts, Gretchen and Peter set up a special farmed animal adoption fund, and guests were able to choose from a turkey, two goats, a cow, a rooster and a pig who were all in need of funding and care. Guests arrived an hour early so that they could meet their adoptive animals, and the dinner tables were named after animals, identifiable by their photographs. Strings of fairy lights, lanterns and 200 vegan votives provided the atmosphere for the gourmet feast catered by upscale LA eatery Madeleine Bistro.
Their Story: Gretchen and Peter almost missed out on their perfect love match. They both lived in Boulder, Colo., on the same street for seven years and had never met. Theyd seen each other around, though, and it wasnt until three days before Gretchen was scheduled to move 1,000 miles away to Los Angeles that Peter found the nerve to ask her out. That was New Years Day 2000, and theyve been together ever since. I knew within days that he was the only guy for me, says Gretchen. She postponed moving for three months to get to know him. He ended up moving to California with her and the two of them found an instant family in the rescued farmed animals and caring volunteers at Animal Acres, their home away from home.
