Aliya & Michael’s love story …
New vegan Aliya wasn’t just looking for some good tunes and plant-based support when she walked into a punk rock concert in early 2010. She was also interested in an animal rights workshop that was happening at the event—but missed it and sought out the organizer, Michael, executive director of Farm Animal Rights Movement. When she saw his blonde spiked hair and kind smile, she suddenly became a lot more curious about the event planner than the seminar, but Michael was too frazzled to notice. Later, he realized the pretty girl who had talked to him earlier was worth finding again, so he searched and finally found her. They talked about vegan living through three sets of music and their “official” first date happened five days later at a vegan bakery. Love began. The pair dated for two years and then one day proposed to each other almost simultaneously! Eighteen months later, they were married—and Michael made sure he wasn’t too frazzled to miss anything that day.
The big day …
Aliya and Michael chose an outdoor setting for their ceremony. The decor was either made by friends and family or purchased on eBay or from Modcloth. Sixty family members and friends watched as they read statements on the meaning of love and how they were living more full and engaged lives because of each other. The ceremony details were deliberately unconventional, including Aliya’s red wedding gown. Following the vows, guests enjoyed dinner and were joined by 50 more friends for the reception. Both mothers-in-law gave a toast and then the newly married couple whipped out some complicated swing dance moves as the new Mr. and Ms. Webermann (their combined last names).
