This April, IKEA will begin selling vegan Swedish meatballs at its in-store restaurants across the United States. According to news reports, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was responsible for pressuring the company to introduce a vegan version of the popular dish so to appeal to a broad customer base. According to an IKEA spokesperson, “One of the exciting new products is a veggie ball which will be launched in our stores from April and onwards. The veggie ball does not have any animal content and is therefore also suitable for vegans.” In recent years, fast-food restaurants have added vegan options to menus, including a tofu filling at Chipotle Mexican Grill, vegan sliders at White Castle, and almond-milk frozen yogurt at TCBY.
