Beyond Burger, the highly publicized “bleeding” plant-based burger made by Bill Gates-backed vegan meat-makers Beyond Meat, sold out within an hour of its debut at a Whole Foods Market in Boulder, CO. The hyperrealistic patties made headlines this week in part for the innovative marketing plan used to sell them: the completely plant-based burgers are sold refrigerated next to (and packaged and protected from) real meat products rather than frozen brands set amongst other veggie options. The decision, Beyond Meat said, is to be a point of entry for carnivores into the realm of vegan eating. Response has been so great that an entirely plant-based burger bar has been created around the new option at the Boulder Pearl Street Whole Foods where it debuted. Whole Foods representative Danika Terri told VegNews that aside from the staple beef-less burger, the new “fun, diner-feel” bar launched yesterday serves “Filet Ah Fishless” and Southern Chick’n Sandwiches with sides of millet tots, sweet potato hush puppies, and French fries, along with a vanilla coconut milk milkshake in the works—all of which sold out before the bar’s closing. “It’s been a really positive, fun experience working at this venue,” Terri said. “It’s exciting to offer these plant-based options to our customers.”
