Food media outlet Eater Los Angeles recently conducted a test to discover if the recently opened 365 by Whole Foods Market is more cost effective when it comes to gathering ingredients for a vegan kale Caesar salad. Staff writer Farley Elliott started the extensive research project with a recipe for the salad from vegan blog Oh She Glows—which calls for 15-ingredients including chickpeas, lacinato kale, and staples such as olive oil. After visiting competitors such as Trader Joe’s, Vons, and mother store Whole Foods, Elliott concluded, “365’s promise of paying less for high-minded groceries seems—at least where vegan kale Caesar salads are concerned—to actually pan out.” The grand total salad ingredients cost $41.95 at 365 as compared to $51.18 at Whole Foods. Von’s (total $48.10) and Trader Joe’s (total $38.59) were both disqualified as they did not carry nutritional yeast or vegan Worchester sauce required for the recipe. 365 opened its Los Angeles outpost on May 25 and features an in-store location of famed New York-based vegan restaurant By CHLOE.
