Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby—the husband/wife duo behind award-winning fine-dining restaurant Vedge, among others—announced plans for a new vegan eatery, Wiz Kid. The café is slated to open this fall next door to street food-focused V Street, the couple’s second restaurant. Wiz Kid will offer limited seating and counter service with a small menu comprised of creative sandwiches such as the namesake Wiz Kid—made with plant-based “steak,” mushrooms, long hot peppers, and rutabaga-based “wiz” sauce. “Vedge is becoming so serious,” Landau says, pointing to the juxtaposition of this new casual café. “We just want to be chefs having fun.” Earlier this year, media outlet philly.com prophesied that 2016 is “The Year of the Vegan” in Philadelphia given the growing number of plant-based restaurants.
