Petition for Vegan Options at In-N-Out Gains Steam

At nearly 25,000 signatures, veggie burgers may find an in at In-N-Out.

A petition launched by The Good Food Institute (GFI) that asks In-N-Out to add a veggie burger to the chain’s all-meat menu has gained major traction. The petition—which currently has about 25,000 signatures—has been covered by national media outlets, including New York Magazine, Fortune, and a two-minute live news segment on Los Angeles news station KTLA. According to the petition, “In-N-Out has been letting its fans down by failing to serve anything that would satisfy a burger-loving customer who wants a healthy, humane, and sustainable option.” It also points out that many fast-food restaurants—such as Chipotle, White Castle, and even Burger King—have added meat-free options to satisfy customer demand. “In-N-Out is based in southern California,” GFI executive director Bruce Friedrich told VegNews, “which is a mecca for plant-based eating. So In-N-Out should be a leader in offering plant-based options—not a follower.” To demonstrate that adding a veggie burger would be profitable, the petition points out that the popularity of meatless options is growing—particularly amongst burger-loving millennials who possess $200 billion in annual buying power. “By making this single addition,” the petition states, “In-N-Out would be making a huge statement that it truly cares about its customers’ health, and the health of the planet.” Meanwhile, newly opened vegan drive-thru VegeWay Burger in Las Vegas is remaking In-N-Out classic burgers, which owner Kenny Chye saysi, “sell very well every day.”
