Newspaper that I then recycle and vinegar scented with either 1. dying herbs or flowers, or 2. essential oils.

Posted: Mar 30 2009 14:01PM By Melisser

Recycle everything! Every bag, bottle, plastic container or jar in my house gets reused, especially when I buy from the bulk bins! I also agree with the vinegar tip!

Posted: Mar 30 2009 14:20PM By Shari

I use a dilute vinegar solution with water (1:2 ratio) and add a few extra drops of essential oil to add a natural scent and natural antimicrobial properties - lemongrass is my favorite!

Boiling hot water really helps remove stains and clear clogged drains.

Posted: Mar 30 2009 19:24PM By Harpist

I recycle everything to the point it's almost ridiculous to have trash service. I love vinegar and baking soda for cleaning!

bon ami cleaner!

Posted: Mar 31 2009 05:30AM By Erin

Someone taught me to clean out coffee pots (we drink alot of coffee in my house) with ice cubes and salt. You simply swirl it around and the salt scours the scuzz out of the bottom. Its way better than the chemical cleaners plus I don't have to try to cram my hand in the pot or worry that I didn't rinse it out well enough!

Posted: Mar 31 2009 05:55AM By Mecca Vaughn

I really love using baking soda and vinegar. I used both of them to clen the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and of course, my room. I used baking soda to brush/whitening my teeth everyday, with water, but I'll not used any "animal" products toothpaste (only organic-vegan toothpaste). I used olive oil, lemon juice, and vinegar to polish wood tables.

Posted: Mar 31 2009 06:59AM By Rebecca

Baking soda (even for my teeth!) and vinegar and water simple and safe

Posted: Mar 31 2009 08:52AM By Shelley

I clean my floors and the tile in my bathroom with "steam"...I have an H2O mop, and hand held steam cleaner...nothing cleans better, no chemicals, and very little electricity used.

I like to use washable rags (with a spritz of Method ,of course)for spot cleaning rather than disposable paper towels. I also use old shampoo and a sponge to clean my bathtub as needed. It's non-toxic and a good way to use up shampoo that I didn't like.

Posted: Apr 01 2009 10:45AM By corey

to clean my mirrors and windows, I use crumbled up junk-mail newsprint ads instead of paper towels - streak free, no lint, and free.

Posted: Apr 01 2009 10:45AM By Sarah

I agree that baking soda is highly underrated, but vinegar and newspaper are my favorite tools for making glass and mirrors shine!

Posted: Apr 01 2009 10:49AM By Amy

I use baking soda to clean the toilet. I simply drain the bowl of water and sprinkle some baking soda in and scrub away! Also, I wash all my laundry in cold water. It is more energy efficient and my clothes are just as clean as ever!

Posted: Apr 01 2009 10:55AM By veganlisa

Baking soda! It helps with the tea stains I leave in my mugs. I also like sea salt for scrubbing pots.

Using Earth-friendly cleaning products and recycling!

Posted: Apr 01 2009 11:37AM By Caroljean

I have been using about a 1/4 Cup vingar in the rinse cycle of my washing machine for about 35 years now. My Grandmother told me that it is the only way to get that fresh smell and soft clothes every time you wash. Even when washing by hand use vingar in the rinse water. It helps the fabric hold the dye in it and cleans out all the soap that might remain in the cloth.

Having a dishtowel readily available in the kitchen is key to paper towel reduction.

Posted: Apr 01 2009 12:23PM By Teresa

One green cleaning tip I love is to put the dishwasher on the air-dry function, rather than the energy hogging heat dry. This way you help the environment and you can watch your energy bill go down. A TWO-FOR_ONE!

Simple vinegar does the trick

Lavender dish soap. Heaven!

Posted: Apr 02 2009 09:02AM By Carrie

Baking soda and pure castille soap (like Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap) in the sink work as well as Soft Scrub without the scary side-effects and damage to your sink finish. But watch out! It is pretty powerful and can irritate extra-sensitive skin when mixed together. I use gloves and voila! Clean sink & tub!

Baking soda and vinegar works wonders when my shower drain gets clogged!

Posted: Apr 02 2009 09:08AM By S Yanoff

For cleaning windows, I stuck a spray nozzle onto the top of a bottle of club soda. It's a great cleaner/degreaser (and even safe to use on painted surfaces such as walls). My kids enjoy using it and I know because it's just club soda that it's safe for them to use and safe to have around pets as well. -Scott

Doc Bronners!

Posted: Apr 02 2009 09:09AM By Jason

I actually use Method products in most cases. However, I really really wish they'd make refills of their cleaning solutions. I don't like having to toss out the bottles when they are empty. It's for that reason specifically that I haven't switched to their stuff for everything I need. Vinegar, baking soda, and elbow grease for everything else.

Something most people over look is to let your compounds clean for you. Often times we will use various green methods for cleaning and then immediately scrub away. Depending on which ingredients you use, vinegar, baking soda, ect you may need to let it sit a bit. Also all formulas can be adjusted for the job. Add a bit more of the base to thicken your cleaning product and it can then act like soft scrub or other abrasive cleaning agents.

Posted: Apr 02 2009 09:16AM By Helen

Baking soda and vinegar are nature's wonders. When my kitchen sponge gets too grimy to use anymore, I scrub my bathroom with it.

You can use denture tablets or Alka-Seltzer as a toilet cleaner--just put a couple of tablets in, let it sit for a while, then scrub. To get berry stains out, pour boiling water on the stain. You can use a banana peel for shoe polish. Rub the shoe with the inside of the peel, then buff. Petroleum jelly also makes a good shoe polish--makes shoes shiny, and keeps them from cracking in the winter. You can remove heel marks from floors with a pencil eraser, and can use a rolled-up piece of white bread to remove marks from wallpaper. One more--cooled black tea will kill dust mites in your carpets.

The best way to clean green is to crank up the music and polish the furniture with old t-shirts. For the porcelin sink and tub, dampened baking soda with salt is the best. For the coffee pot grime, same mixture. It's the music though- that gets you moving- some good old moby works for me.

Posted: Apr 03 2009 05:22AM By Sher

I'm fairly new at being green and so far I love it! Thanks for all the tips that everyone is leaving. Some I already do and others I can't wait to try. The only tip I have is to live each day looking for a way to be a little greener! (It might even help you sleep better)

I have always believed in vinegar and baking soda. I treat my cutting board by moistening with water and then shaking salt over the surface. Leave it overnight then wash off with water in the AM. Cleans and disinfects. One trick that I didn't see here is to microwave sour smelling sponges and dish rags. Kills the smell and disinfects.

Vinegar and just keeping things clean as they happen. I've learned that most of the hardest things to clean up are that way because they've been left uncleaned for far to long.

I just use hot water on everything; floors, counter tops, etc. It kills the germs and bacteria.

Because you can't recycle plastic bags, I use the one's my roommate brings room to knit with - making prettier, sturdier bags for her and anyone else to reuse.

I love Seventh Generation. The company derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois that states, "In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." Give them a whirl! :-)

Vinegar cleans everything! It's great not to have all those chemical cleaners around anymore.

It's been said, but I'll say it again. Vinegar and baking soda can clean most things, but I particularly love them in the kitchen. This dynamic duo can get stains out of my porcelain sink like nothing else and they get all the smelly spills out of my refrigerator without leaving a weird chemically smell behind.
