Today, October 2, marks World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA), an annual event when activists across the globe educate the public on animal-welfare issues and shine light on the 65 billion land animals raised and slaughtered for food every year. This year, activists will be participating in a one-day Fast Against Slaughter to show solidarity with farmed animals who are starved for at least 12 hours before slaughter. Other events include leafleting, vigils, processions, and film screenings (see the WDFA website for a comprehensive list of events). October 2 was chosen because it is the birthday of peace leader, Mahatma Gandhi, who underwent nearly 20 fasts during his lifetime in political and social protest.
