Vegan Chalk Challenge, an advocacy organization, is sending out a global invitation to its Worldwide Vegan Chalk Bomb event this weekend, October 1-2. Those participating are asked to buy chalk, find a public space to write a positive vegan message, snap a photo, and share it on social media using the hashtag #veganchalkchallenge. “Collective chalking,” as the organization calls it, removes barriers in order to create a mass movement for the endorsement of veganism. Founder James DeAlto became vegan in 2010 and soon realized that he could take his message to the streets, incorporating chalking on his dog walks. The first Vegan Chalk Challenge took place in September 2015—with over 1,000 people signing up to participate on the group’s Facebook page—and the movement has been steadily gaining traction ever since. Notable participants have included Farm Sanctuary president and co-founder Gene Baur, Ethologist and author Jonathan Balcombe, and Ziggy the Traveling Piggy.
