Vegan congee shop The Good Sort will debut in New York City’s Chinatown next week. The shop is the brainchild of Australian Eddy Buckingham and his partner, Chinese-born Jeff Lam. Congee is a sweet and savory dish served for breakfast in China, and The Good Sort creative dishes will use solely plant-based ingredients. The eatery will occupy a space that previously housed a liquor store and will feature a menu that consists of dishes such as a mushroom congee with braised shiitake and jicama, a pear crumble congee, and other non-congee dishes. The Good Sort will also serve teas, juices, pastries, and color-coded lattes—made with coconut, oat, or almond milk bases, then colored with ingredients such as beets, turmeric, algae, matcha, and activated charcoal. New York City’s vegan scene is rapidly expanding with innovative cruelty-free establishments such as upcoming butcher shop Monk’s Vegan Delicatessen, which is headed to Brooklyn this spring.
