Whole Foods Names Plant-Based Tech as Top Trend

The major grocery chain believes new technology—such as bleeding Beyond Burgers and tomato-based tuna—will push the plant-based industry to further dominate the food world.

A trend report released this week compiled by global buyers and experts at Whole Foods Market named plant-based technology as a top trend to watch in 2018. “Plant-based diets and dishes continue to dominate the food world,” the report states, “and now the tech industry has a seat at the table, too.” Experts believe that the role of science in development of plant-based foods—such as Beyond Meat’s “bleeding” Beyond Burger and tomato-based “ahimi,” a vegan tuna alternative developed by Ocean Hugger Foods—will push plant-based eating to the forefront of the food industry. “These new production techniques are also bringing some new varieties of nut milks and yogurts made from pili nuts, peas, bananas, macadamia nuts, and pecans,” the report states. “Dairy-free indulgences [such as] vegan frosting, brownies, ice cream, brioche, and crème brûlée are getting so delicious, non-vegans won’t know the difference—or they might choose them, anyway!” Whole Foods’ predictions are in-line with last month’s “Food + Beverage” report compiled by research firm Baum + Whiteman that stated plant-based foods would become a “mega trend” in 2018.
