Denver-based brewery Alternation Brewing Company recently created a vegan alternative to milk stout-style beer. Vegan owner Brendan Pleskow brews the For the Animals milk stout using organic almond meal and organic almond extract that gives the beer a nutty, almond milk-like flavor. “We achieved the results through a high mash temperature and long boil to promote long-chain sugars and caramelization,” Pleskow explained to local media outlet Westword, “as well as the use of a low attenuating yeast strain to promote greater residual sugar in the final product.” The brewery partners with local vegan food vendors to offer patrons hearty compliments to its vegan beers and supports local charities such as animal sanctuary Broken Shovels Farm. Pleskow also donates a portion of sales from For the Animals to benefit animal-rights organization The Humane League.
