Fifty-five percent of Americans support a global treaty ensuring the US would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new poll from USA Today and Gallup Poll. However, many of the 1,025 poll participants worried that such a treaty would adversely affect the economy. Support for a global treaty is highest in the eastern US and lowest in the South. Nearly 49 percent of adults over age 65 oppose a legally binding treaty for the US, while more than 66 percent of people age 18 to 29 support the idea. President Obama arrives at the United Nation’s Copenhagen Climate Conference on December 18.
