Actress Bo Derek Fights to End Horse Slaughter

At a recent news conference, Derek voiced her support for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Actress Bo Derek is speaking out against horse slaughter for human consumption, advocating for the passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act—legislation that would make slaughtering horses illegal, as well as prohibit the transport of horses for slaughter in Canada and Mexico. Derek has teamed up with Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, who introduced the bill, to raise awareness about the issue. “We must continue to open people’s eyes about this appalling practice that is so often hidden from the public,” Derek says. In 2011, Congress failed to renew a five-year ban on the use of federal tax dollars to facilitate slaughter, leaving some lawmakers concerned about a resurgence in the cruel practice.
