Rally at the Capitol to Prevent Horse Slaughter

There was an outpouring of support for the SAFE Act, which will protect horses from being killed for human consumption.

Horse slaughter for human consumption became an issue of contention after the Obama administration processed a horse-slaughter inspection application from a facility in New Mexico earlier this year. To combat this inhumane practice, a group of equine advocates, ranging from local school children to celebrities, congregated at the Capitol with Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., Representative Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., and Representative Jim Moran, D-Va. to support the Safeguard American Food Exports Act. SAFE will prohibit horse slaughter in the US and stop companies from shipping horses overseas to be killed for food.
