Clive Standen, who stars in the hit History Channel series Vikings, recently showed the compassionate man behind the merciless character Rollo he plays on television in a PSA for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Standen denounced the Danish Faroe Islands’ ritual summer pilot whale hunt, in which hundreds of the endangered marine mammals are herded toward the islands’ shores, pulled into shallow waters with hooks, and butchered with knives. “There’s no place for such barbaric behavior in the twenty-first century,” says Standen. According to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, 263 pilot whales were killed this August, and nearly 1,000 whales can be slaughtered in single hunting season.
