Vegan Weddings 2013 (Heather Tyng & Bruce Rozeboom)

Meeting in the grocery aisle led to this vegan couple walking down the wedding aisle.

Heather Tyng & Bruce Rozeboom

Guests: 100
Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Date: June 15, 2012
Budget: $19,5000

Their Story: Heather and Bruce’s relationship began in an unlikely place—the aisle of a natural foods store in Virginia Beach. Cookbook in hand, Heather was busy scanning the shelves for specific ingredients and Bruce asked her if the book was any good. After learning that Bruce was vegan, Heather invited him to join her vegan Facebook group. Bruce wanted to spend more time with Heather while avoiding the awkwardness of a first date, so he asked her to help him organize a vegan charity bake sale. They worked together as a platonic pair for three months, and after they successfully pulled off the bake sale, the transition to coupledom was effortless.

The Big Day: A group of Bruce and Heather’s family and friends gathered at the scenic Virginia Beach oceanfront, where they proceeded to wait...and wait...and wait. When the ceremony was scheduled to start, Bruce was still at home, watching a YouTube tutorial on how to tie a bowtie, so he and Heather were both an hour late to their own wedding. Luckily the steel drum band kept guests entertained until the bride and groom appeared. The couple wrote their own vows (Heather on green construction paper, Bruce on his iPad). After the ceremony, the newlyweds rode a bicycle built for two to the reception venue. The party continued at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront’s Sky Bar, where the revelers watched a banner plane fly overhead bearing the message, “Heather & Bruce tied the knot today.”
