Slate Editor Says Vegan Mayo is Better in Taste Test

A veg-skeptical mayonnaise enthusiast concedes that the ubiquitous plant-based condiment is better than the real thing.

Recently, Katherine Goldstein—Slate magazine’s innovation editor—blogged about the vegan mayonnaise Vegenaise, and how the plant-based product is superior to its fat-laden forbear. Goldstein notes that she is not a vegetarian and is usually unimpressed by fake meat and cheeses, but she purchased Vegenaise during a recent shopping excursion in an attempt to promote healthy eating options. According to the Slate editor, the plant-based condiment was better than real mayonnaise: “The flavor was much lighter than regular mayo, and had a pleasing balance of flavors that made regular Hellmann’s taste both too sweet and too sour by comparison,” she writes. Goldstein also notes that during a blind taste test she administered to Slate staffers, 12 out of 15 subjects said that at least one of the Vegenaise-based dishes tasted better than its mayo-based counterpart.
