Jared Leto Buffs Up on Vegan Diet for Batman Film

Oscar-winning actor preps for role as the Joker in the upcoming Batman movie.

Jared Leto has been vegan for two decades, and he’s sticking to his humane diet while bulking up to play the Joker in The Suicide Squad, a new Batman movie scheduled for release in August 2016. In addition to iron-pumping workouts, Leto’s regimen includes frequent food breaks (he especially likes vegan tacos). In 2014, Leto won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as an HIV-positive transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club as well as PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity title. How will his performance as the classic comic-book supervillain stack up against famous portrayals by such Hollywood heavyweights as Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger? Leto told Billboard magazine that he’s excited to play “this beautiful disaster of a character—what a big challenge.”
