On Friday, Time released the seven best foods to decrease heart disease risk, and they’re all vegan! The publication named dark chocolate, edamame, rooibos tea, tomatoes, walnuts, flax seeds, and sprouted garlic as the top heart-healthy foods. More than 50 percent of annual heart disease deaths could have been prevented by making dietary improvements, according to a study at Emory University in Atlanta. “You already know to avoid smoking, but the other four main causes—obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes—can each be eliminated or dramatically reduced with a handful of dietary changes,” the article said. The food items featured possess anti-inflammatory properties, numerous nutrients, fiber, antioxidants, and fatty acids to not only promote cardiovascular health, but also overall wellbeing.
