A few months after stockholders challenged Tesla Motors to go leather-free by 2019, the luxury electric car company has answered with its first vegan-friendly vehicle. The new Model X sport utility vehicle will now be available with a synthetic leather option in “Ultra White” for its seats and steering wheel. The luxurious vegan leather replaces a previous cloth substitute—an option introduced by the company after its conscientious car-buyers pointed out the contradiction of an eco-friendly company solely making use of unsustainable, cruel leather material. “We find that customers enjoy both leather and non-leather options for their Teslas,” Khobi Brooklyn, a company spokeswoman told Los Angeles Times. “We are committed to giving customers the ability to build the Tesla that meets their needs and lifestyle choices.” Tesla follows in the footsteps of Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, BMW, Infiniti and other car manufacturers that offer vegan leather interiors.
