Vegan Ben & Jerry's Line Takes Over the Internet
News of the ice cream company's new vegan line is covered by every media outlet from Forbes to TIME.
Last week, Ben & Jerry’s announced its highly anticipated line of vegan flavors—namely Chunky Monkey, Coffee Caramel Fudge, P.B. & Cookies, and Chocolate Fudge Brownie—and received an explosion of social media and mass news coverage. Ben & Jerry’s representative Lindsay Bumps told Fortune that “there’s clearly been a demand for a non-dairy line,” while company flavor guru Kirsten Schimoler explained the process of creating the new almond milk-based line to Forbes, revealing that the vegan Chunky Monkey flavor is closest to the original. From taste tests conducted live on Today—wherein host Hoda Kotb exclaimed, “Oh my God, I’m so happy!”—and video coverage on USA Today to write-ups on CNN Money, Inquisitr, TIME, and Gothamist, media outlets and vegan ice cream lovers alike can’t get enough of this internet-shattering news story. The company even received a “Proggy”—which stands for “progress”—award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Ben & Jerry’s regularly references cultural themes, with past flavors such as comedy news host Stephen Colbert-inspired Americone Dream and “Bernie’s Yearning”—a flavor dedicated to presidential candidate Bernie Sanders—and its new vegan line successfully captures popular culture once again.
