Vegan company Gardein—known for its meatless chicken, beef, and fish alternatives—just released Meatless Pepperoni Pizza Pockets with nine grams of vegan protein per serving. The pizza pockets—which contain vegan pepperoni, mozzarella, and marinara sauce wrapped in a GMO-free wheat crust—are a nod to the microwaveable pockets developed in the 1990s, but without animal products. Gardein created the new pockets, currently available in Stop and Shop, Stater Brothers, Shoprite retailers, and others, after a 2015 Mintel US Snack report indicated that frozen Italian snacks were preferred by consumers. In recent months, vegan companies began rapid-fire releasing new products to provide suitable animal product-free alternatives to American diet staples such as Daiya Food’s creamy dressings, Hampton Creek’s cookie dough, and Follow Your Heart’s vegan egg.
