Detroit-based vegan food truck Shimmy Shack launched its Michigan’s Sexiest Vegans calendar. The 2017 calendar was created in partnership with Sanctuary and Safe Haven for Animals Farms (SASHA) to execute this year’s theme of “sexy farm pinups.” Calendar participants were drawn from online applications submitted by Shimmy Shack customers who explained their choice to go vegan and why they consider themselves sexy. Shimmy Shack owner Debra Levantrosser says a wide age range of vegans (from 18 to 60) were chosen based on both physical qualities and character traits. “We looked at compassion, love, and passion when selecting them,” Levantrosser says. To promote veganism as a lifestyle choice that everyday people make, Levantrosser chose people from many walks of life. “It’s not ‘strange’ to be vegan,” Levantrosser says. “In fact we have an attorney, US Marine, real estate agent, engineer, student, professor, business person, model, and other professions represented in the calendar.” Half of the proceeds from the calendar—available for $18 on Shimmy Shack’s website—will benefit SASHA Farms, while 10 percent will be allocated toward the Jim Ward Scholarship at the Center for Creative Studies in Michigan.
