Breyers Releases Vegan Ice Cream

A shocking amount of vegan ice cream flavors are debuting left and right—first Ben & Jerry's, and now Breyers.

Iconic ice cream company Breyers has entered the plant-based market with a newly released vegan ice cream flavor. Indiana resident Alyssa Weiss spotted a carton of a new non-dairy Breyers Oreo Cookies & Cream flavor made with almond milk at a Highland location of Meijer’s—a chain grocery store with locations in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Kentucky. Weiss later posted a photograph of the ingredient list and nutritional information for the new flavor (sold for $4.99 per 1.5 quarts) to confirm that the “frozen almond milk dessert”—the language Breyers is using to market the flavor—is indeed vegan. Earlier this week, Ben & Jerry’s—a brand that shares parent company Unilever with Breyers—added several new flavors (Cherry Garcia, Coconut Seven Layer Bar, and Coconut Almond Brittle) to their existing non-dairy line which debuted last year. A recent industry research report by Packaged Facts found that the non-dairy sector is driving growth in the otherwise stagnant ice cream industry, and product launches such as these prove that vegan options are indeed becoming attractive to corporations that historically rely on animal products for profits.
