Vegan Beer Debuts for Sea Shepherd's 40th Birthday

The honorary beer by California's Libertine Brewing Company is brewed using ocean water, kelp, wild yeast, locally sourced blood oranges, and zero animal products.

Central California-based craft brewery The Libertine Brewing Company developed a special vegan beer for ocean conservation organization Sea Shepherd’s 40th anniversary. The limited-edition beer titled Sea Shepherd Blood Orange Gose is made with blood oranges sourced from a local ranch, wild yeast, kelp foraged from nearby Morro Bay, and brewed with reduced ocean water—a process Libertine’s Head of Marketing Jason Hudson tells VegNews gives the brew a briny taste traditional to German gose-style beers. “For forty years, Sea Shepherd has fought to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans,” Libertine founder Tyler Clark said. “Known for their ‘direct-action’ tactics, Sea Shepherd is fully committed to the survival of future generations. Inspired by this battle, The Libertine Brewing Company has created a beer that honors Sea Shepherd in authentic form.” Sea Shepherd (a vegan organization) is most famously known for its work to end whale slaughter by Japanese fleets in Antarctica—documented by long-running television series Whale Wars. The beer will debut to the public at Libertine’s San Luis Obispo facility and restaurant on May 7 during Sea Shepherd’s Beer Release Party, and all profits from sales will go to benefit Sea Shepherd’s continued conservation efforts.
