Buffalo, NY’s first vegan doughnut shop Fry Baby Donut Co. opened last week—and sold out in its first day. The shop features inventive flavors that rotate weekly, including Bubble Gum, Root Beer Float, Jalapeño Raspberry, S’Mores, Cherry Cola, and standard menu mainstays such as a classic chocolate glazed doughnut. “Establishments see that vegans are spending money and will make something for them as an afterthought,” owner and professional baker Ann Hogan said. “I wanted to make something that was good for everybody, [and] appetizing enough for non-vegans to not realize it was vegan.” While all of the baked goods at the shop—which also sells cinnamon buns, fritters, and beverages—are vegan, Fry Baby carries dairy-based half-and-half to be used for coffee. Last month, Portland, OR also got its very first all-vegan doughnut shop Doe Donuts that features an array of raised doughnuts topped with a variety of glazes, vegan edible pearls, and chocolate shavings.
