What the Health Creates Crowds of New Vegans in Texas

Texans are flocking to Spiral Diner and V-Eats in Dallas after learning the truth about the meat and dairy industries through the new vegan documentary.

Local media outlet Dallas Observer reported a notable spike in new vegans in the Dallas area after the release of vegan documentary What the Health. The movie—which was created by the filmmakers behind environmental documentary Cowspiracy and debuted on Netflix last month—follows producer Kip Andersen as he uncovers the links between animal products and widespread disease. According to several restaurant owners, viewers in the Dallas area have responded positively to the film’s message. “I had a new couple in the diner last week who were transitioning to a vegan diet after seeing What the Health,” Spiral Diner & Bakery owner Sara Tomerlin said. “I do think [the film] has an impact on society, and it definitely brings new customers to our restaurant.” V-Eats Modern Vegan owner Troy Gardner has also noticed an increase in customers dining at his vegan restaurant since the release of the film. “In the past few days alone,” Gardener said, “I’ve come into contact with five different individuals who said they went vegan because of this documentary. It's crazy that I've heard so much about [What the Health] in such a short period of time.” Newly released film Okja—which centers around friendly “superpig” Okja, who is raised for slaughter—is having similar effects, with many vowing to eschew meat after watching it.
