In a recent interview with Bloomberg News, Virgin Group billionaire Richard Branson spoke about his decision to invest in food technology company Memphis Meats—which became the first “clean” (also known as “cultured”) meat company to close a Series A funding round, raising $17 million from major investors last week. “I’m thrilled to have invested in Memphis Meats,” Branson said. “I believe that in 30 years or so we will no longer need to kill any animals and that all meat will either be clean or plant-based, taste the same, and also be much healthier for everyone.” Memphis Meats plans to debut its first products—meat grown from a small amount of animal cells in a lab setting—by 2021.
