Freshmen at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) will read Eating Animals, which details author Jonathan Safran Foer’s vegetarianism and people’s relationship with food, before starting school this August. Jan Yopp, chairwoman of UNC’s selection committee, says, “I think any student reading this book will look at the research that the author did and realize that that’s what they should think about doing for all the big decisions in their lives.” The two North Carolina universities are bitter rivals on and off the field—this collaboration is the first of its kind.
