British officials announced Monday that they intend to ban the use of animals in testing household products, such as detergent, air freshener, and cleaning spray. In a statement to The Daily Mail regarding the initiative, Home Office minister Lynne Featherstone says, “We believe it is possible to sell household products without inflicting pain and suffering on animals, and it is unacceptable that testing in this area continues.” It is not clear how soon the ban will take effect, but the government did say that they have already started consultations with companies and trade bodies. The European Union banned the testing of cosmetics on animals in 2009.
