Farm animals in New York may find themselves living slightly happier lives in the near future. Assembly member Linda Rosenthal has put forward bill A08163, which would prohibit the confinement of breeding pigs, calves, and egg-laying hens to cages that severely restrict their movement. The Humane Society of the United States and Farm Sanctuary have already expressed their support for this bill, which is strikingly similar to the California Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act passed last fall. The New York bill currently awaits approval from the Agriculture Committee. If it passes, New York will be the seventh state to implement this type of farm reform. Seven down, 43 to go … Hey, at least it’s a start!
