Major Food Suppliers Practice Poor Animal Welfare

Major food suppliers such as Walmart, Nestlé, and Starbucks are not monitoring the welfare of their farmed animals, according to the new Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare report supported by World Society for the Protection of Animals and Compassion in World Farming. A total of 68 of the biggest food retailers, restaurants, and producers were investigated; only 46 percent of the companies have a formal policy on animal welfare, and even fewer detail how management monitors the animals to be used in the food chain. Topping the list for having absolutely no outline of animal welfare on its business agenda was Walmart. Nestlé, the largest food producer in the world, and Starbucks have policies in place, but little actual implementation.
