The Guinness World Records recenlty highlighted 117-year-old restaurant Haus Hiltl, the oldest continuously-operated vegetarian eatery in the world, as part of World Vegetarian Month coverage. Founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1898 by Ambrosius Hiltl, the business is believed to be the first vegetarian restaurant in the world. Currently operated by the fourth generation of the Hiltl Family, the company has expanded in the last century and now consists of an à la carte restaurant and buffet, self-service to-go food, a bar/lounge, a club, a cooking studio, catering services, and store. In November 2013, the restaurant opened Hiltl Shop, Switzerland’s first vegetarian butcher shop next to the original Haus Hiltl. The restaurant company offers more than 500 dishes with international flavors and plenty of well-labeled vegan options.
