New supermarkets to open under the Consorzio Nazionale Dettaglianti (Conad) Italian retail brand will feature a dedicated vegan section placed prominently near the produce aisle. This reconfiguration, according to sales manager Valentino Colantuono, is being implemented in an effort to serve a growing number of vegan customers. “Every time we open a new supermarket, we give more importance to the fresh produce section,” Colantuono said. “Demand is continuously increasing. Our new stores will have a vegan section from now on, and we will also try to adapt the old ones.” A dedicated vegan products section is a step in the right direction, but in 2011, Germany became home to Veganz—Europe’s first entirely vegan supermarket—which announced its intent to open an outpost in Portland, OR with a clothing store and restaurant in the coming months.
