Brooklyn, NY borough president Eric Adams adopted a vegan diet after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Six months ago, Adams learned that he has the disease, and one month later, he decided to eschew animal products completely. Now, Adams reports that he no longer relies on medication. The politician says his doctors did not present a vegan diet as an option for reversing diabetes. “My recovery is an indictment on our healthcare system,” Adams says. “The sole goal should have been, ‘Eric, we’re going to get that reversed,’ not, ‘Eric, we’re going to give you the prescription that you need that you can take the rest of your life.’” Adams is using his recovery as a stepping stone for advocating veganism to others with type 2 diabetes, including his mother. “I want people to see her with her cane,” Adams says, “her Southern lifestyle of enjoying her fried chicken and cooking her pies and cakes. I want them to see how even she can transform her life.” Various studies have proven that a healthy vegan diet can prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes, as well as other diseases plaguing our country—including heart disease and certain types of cancer.
