Iconic Veg Restaurant Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Feminist-founded Connecticut vegetarian restaurant Bloodroot heads into its fifth decade with new menu items featuring vegan cheese.
This year, iconic vegetarian restaurant and bookstore Bloodroot celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Connecticut-based eatery was founded by feminists Selma Miriam and Noel Furie, and currently employs immigrant women from various parts of the world who contribute to the restaurant's multi-ethnic menu. To celebrate, the duo is hosting vegetarian dinners until mid-April—the meals will be helmed by visiting chefs from other local restaurants. Bloodroot is also revitalizing its menu with a happy-hour special that includes vegan cheeses—that Miriam developed with the help of Miyoko Schinner’s cookbook Artisan Vegan Cheese—alongside its long-standing menu favorite, walnut-mushroom pâté. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Miriam revealed that she has been testing more vegan recipes including whipped cream, butter, and ice cream. “It’s good to explore new things,” Miriam said.
