Vegan Punk Café Opens Next to PDX Vegan Grocery

The Portland vegan scene continues to grow with the opening of the Jet Black Coffee Company next door to vegan grocery store Food Fight!!

Vegan café Jet Black Coffee Company recently opened adjacent to the vegan grocery store Food Fight! in the Gateway neighborhood of Portland, OR. Shop owners Travis Coe and Karla Nolt used their favorite punk band Jawbreaker as the inspiration for the café’s name (one of the band’s songs) and for Jet Black’s “Dear You” in-house coffee blend, which is named after the band’s popular album. Jet Black serves coffee from local purveyor Water Avenue Coffee and whips it into cappuccinos and lattes with hemp, soy, almond, or coconut milk. The café sources vegan baked goods such as pie muffins, cinnamon rolls, and savory “cheddar” chive scones from Sweet Pea Baking Co., wholesale shop Shoofly Vegan Bakery, and Gluten Free Gem Bakery. Pairing vegan businesses close together is not uncommon in the City of Roses. Portland’s vegan mini-mall—a group of companies that operate side-by-side including clothing store The Herbivore Clothing Company, bakery Sweet Pea Baking Co., the flagship location of grocery store Food Fight!, and tattoo shop Scapegoat Tattoos—recently received widespread media attention after a Buzzfeed video highlighting the unique establishment went viral in May. Portland’s vegan scene continues to boom as last month alone, two vegan eateries—fries-only restaurant Baked Roots and vegan doughnut shop Doe Donuts—opened in the city. The momentum continues as Canadian import Virtuous Pie—a two-story, all-vegan pizzeria—is slated to open this month.
