Bob Harper Goes Vegan

Fitness guru and The Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper says a vegan diet has improved his health.

By Liz Miller

This week, celebrity trainer Bob Harper told VegNews that he has gone vegan, cutting all animal products out of his diet, and shared that the switch to a cruelty-free diet has improved his health. “I enjoy living a plant-based diet because it makes me feel clear headed and strong, not to mention my genetically high cholesterol dropped more than 100 points. That was all the motivation I needed,” says Harper. Famous for helping Americans slim down on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, Harper has been a longtime vegetarian, often promoting meat-free recipes. In addition to helping stars get fit and contestants shed pounds, the 44-year-old vegan trainer also teaches exercise classes through Crunch gym and has his own series of workout videos titled Bob Harper’s Inside Out Method.

I turned from veg of over 25 years to vega back in Marcb c. It is a heathier life style. I fully support you Keep up the good work to not eat our animals &the bi-products.

I think an even bigger step would be to say he is eating plant-based, whole foods without added oils, sugar or salt. Also we need more people talking of the toll processed foods are taking on our bodies! Thanks!

Way to go Bob, Congrats and Thank You.

Wow, I wonder what Jillian Michaels has to say about this, since she tweeted me that my being vegan was "unhealthy".

I would love to see them promote a vegan diet on The Biggest Loser. I realize Jenny O is a big sponsor, but I'm sure some of the fruit/veg giants would be willing to step up.

Hooray, Bob! Fantastic news for you, your health, the animals and the planet. Cheers to a health-full life! Best, Kendra http://healthfull-life.blogspot.com

I'm happy for anyone that adopts a strictly vegetarian diet, but there's much more to being a vegan than just giving up *eating* animal products. Veganism is against ALL animal exploitation -- not just for food. I hope he and other strict vegetarians will go all the way.

I am a vegan and a fitness nut, and am always thrilled when others jump in. Too long has misinformation due to lack of education and ignorance has given being vegan a bad rep, and I've lost track of the times I've been told being vegan means I'm sickly, dying, or anorexic. I am happily none of the above. People have commented that being vegan isn't the same thing as eating vegan, and I concur. But this is a wonderful step in the right direction. Kudos to Bob Harper!!

I always thought, out of all the celebrities, that HE should go vegan...SOOOO happy he finally did!

Posted: Jun 15 2010 12:17PM By Ray

It's been proven that human beings are carnivors. I will continue eating all kinds of meat. I'm in great shape, my blood profile is perfect, and I feel great. Why should I deny myself the pleasures of good BBQed meat? Too each their own. Nuff said.

Posted: Jun 15 2010 13:21PM By Caroline

Ray--Humans aren't carnivores. They can't live on meat alone. Take out vegetables and you would get incredibly sick. Take out meat and you thrive. Your statement is the most ridiculous thing I've ever hear. Now the Biggest Loser just needs to show Bob promoting meatless recipes! I've seen him promote lean turkey, which I thought was odd since I knew he was vegetarian. Meat free is the way to be! Go Bob!

Why is someone who is not vegan, on VegNews' site? Healthy? I'm not sure about that lol

Posted: Jun 15 2010 17:56PM By Susie

Yippee Bob!!! The planet, your body, and the animal are thankful! Vegan is the only way to live!!!!

Posted: Jun 15 2010 18:03PM By Lea

Bravo Bob! One more celeb to shine a light on a healthy "choice" for America. Look me up if you ever want to help shape up a "fat" vegan...I need help!! lol

I am so happy to hear this news!! I do not think you HAVE to live a vegan lifestyle because you choose a vegan diet. I chose a vegan diet to improve my health. It has made me more conscious of my use of animal products in my life, however I am still able to have a vegan diet, and reap the health benefits even though I still have some leather items in my house! While I wouldn't buy a leather couch again, I am not going to get too worried about all the little things! Starting with our food is a great thing!!! Well done Bob!

Posted: Jun 15 2010 19:45PM By Rachael

I am so excited to hear the news! My family tolerates my vegan ways, and expresses interest from time to time. They are huge TBL fans, so hopefully this will increase motivation and awareness even more! (Does this mean Bob is going to stop with the yogurt and smoothie product placement spots?!)

Posted: Jun 15 2010 19:46PM By Kristy

This makes me happy, though it would make me a lot happier if he would not sell Jennie-O turkey on his show.

Posted: Jun 15 2010 20:52PM By Sun_Mama

So glad to hear it. I hope he can influence the Biggest Loser to stop doing promos for meat and dairy and start doing more promos for things like Lara Bars and other whole foods!

Posted: Jun 16 2010 08:00AM By Mina

Well, I'm happy he decided to cut out meat, dairy & eggs from his diet, kudos and all. However, that doesn't make him Vegan. Veganism isn't a diet. Veganism is a strong belief in Animal Rights which affects what we buy, use, consume, and our food choices. He's not Vegan, since he said it's a diet he's doing & only for health reasons. (I had originally posted this on FB, but thought it would be more productive here)

Woo Hoo Go Bob!! I can't wait for him to come out with a book on vegan recipes that would be great.

Posted: Jun 16 2010 09:26AM By Joanne

Does this mean that there will soon be product placement for Gardien and Vega on Biggest Loser. Go Bob, and stop pretending to eat turkey with the contestants on the show. You know you hate it.

What are three easy things to eat to make the change over to vegan. I am partially vegitarian - a girl who, on occasion, will eat meat (like today). I want to make the change....I just am not good with recipes, cooking - I am going through some major heath crisis actually so change has to be minimal & very easy. Recommendations?

Posted: Jun 16 2010 10:37AM By Kelly O Brien

Whomever has some simple ideas for me, please email me at kell.yob@hotmail.com. It is easier to check my email then cont. back here. Thank you so much. I can only do this little by little - all of you Vegans may not understand that but the change seems overwhelming to me - and being ill, I cannot make those recipes.

please share some of the receipes on the show Biggest Loser, and how about a book.

Always liked him! Glad he saw the light!

Congratulations on becoming a vegan. It is a great change to make.I only have one question. How, since cholesterol is a result of eating foods with cholesterol can one have genetically high cholestreol. It just shows how in the dark the medical community is about meat and animal products, veganism. Cholesterol is foiund in only meat dairy and eggs, period. There is not a plant food in the world that has it. So veg oils and other plant based foods that advertise their ability to lower cholestreol aren"t lying as they can do so as they do not contain any cholesterol. Cholestral levels aren't a medical mystery or condition thay are a result of eating foods that contain cholesterol. If you eat no cholesterol you won't have high cholesterol levels, it no longer is an issue. A vegan diet is the only diet that can honestly lower significantly anyones cholesterol. It is that simple but as most of the medical community are not vegans it may take a while still for them to figure it out.

Bob, thank you for being an example & for saving the creatures from suffering. We are "the biggest" fans of "Biggest Loser" U R LOVED

Posted: Jun 16 2010 17:16PM By Lea

Una R, cholesterol is produced in the body, hence the reason it is in all aniaml products. A person that eats a vegan diet can still have a body that produces more cholesterol than it needs. Just my two cents. Peace.

Bob Stop pretending you eat meat on Biggest Loser. That would do a lot for our community.

Vegan is not a DIET! Is an ethical stance and a way of life. Stop making it a diet, please.

and now we have Vegan snobs.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step! :)

Great news! I always thought Bob looked so kindhearted. and yes "each to their own" and the ONLY way to ensure this is for everyone in the world to go vegan... so the animals can live their OWN lives veganeasy.org

Wow, I had no idea Bob was even vegetarian before. I've watched the American version of TBL (we have our own version here in Australia) and I thought I once heard that he promoted the Atkins diet, which is very protein heavy. Must have heard wrong. Good on him for the change - I have recently begun phasing animal products out of my diet, and it's so encouraging to read the stories of others.

Posted: Jun 24 2010 08:31AM By Tanya

When I said "protein heavy" in my comment above, I meant "meat heavy". And I agree with April's comments above, that Bob should stop pretending to be a meat eater on the show. What is there to be ashamed of being a vegetarian?

Posted: Jun 24 2010 15:07PM By Becky Davis

Go -- now let's get the word out to the rest of this nation -- vegan is true health -- especially raw vegan - take your health to the ultimate level!

Posted: Jun 24 2010 17:39PM By gymmie

Agree with the others re: seems to be a "health" vegan vs. true vegan. And also hope he'd stop pimping Jennie O, dairy products and gum. Shakira if you're still reading :)--same here! Woudl be interesting to hear her two cents. She's put veganism down on her radio show before. She's all about "organic". BLAH!

Posted: Jun 24 2010 21:44PM By Jeff

I honesty think living a cruelty-free diet is to be commended. I have attempted various macro and vegan diets in the past for long stretches but my body and brain do not acclimate well. With that said, I wonder has anyone else noticed how poorly Bob is looking? We are currently watching reruns of season 4 of BL and Bob has aged in the span of 3 years what looks like a decade. Though he is lean and in shape he looks far older than his chronological age of 44. Learning he is vegan explains a lot. What the heart wants, is not always what the body needs.

Posted: Jul 02 2010 02:34AM By Tracy Hedges

That is fantastic.Reducing the need to torture animals one person at a time :)

Posted: Jul 08 2010 12:14PM By Paula

That's wonderful news Bob and, like many others, I hope there can be at least some talk of vegan diets on the show. And to those who are not being supportive of people, like me, who follow a vegan DIET but haven't fully moved to a vegan lifestyle, please recognize that change comes in stages. I fear that comments like that turn many meat-eaters away from even considering veganism. We all have to start somewhere.

Posted: Jul 09 2010 12:25PM By Lisa

That is awesome! Bob is such a great person! he proves that vegans are healthy!
