UK Report Says Go Veg
Independent watchdog informs UK government about sustainability, advocates less meat and dairy.
December 13, 2009
UK citizens are urged to reduce meat and dairy consumption to promote their own health and the health of the planet, according to official recommendations announced December 11. The Sustainable Development Commission, an independent organization that informs government policy in the UK, released a report that advocates eating less meat, dairy, and processed foods. The report acknowledges such a switch will impact the UK’s livestock and food-manufacturing industries. However, the benefits of this dietary change include reduced incidence of heart disease, cancer, and animal-borne disease, as well as less greenhouse gas emissions and lower food prices.
