Next time your boss finds you daydreaming the day away, you can rest assure him or her that you were actively engaged in a mindful problem-solving technique—because you were. A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that daydreaming allows us to enter an important and unique cognitive state in which we can focus on important issues in our lives, rather than the task at hand. Which is a good thing, considering previous studies have shown that we sometimes spend as much as one third of our waking lives in said state!
