UK fish numbers are down 94 percent, causing British fishermen to work 17 times harder today than they did over a century ago, according to a new study published in Nature Communications. The research, conducted by scientists from the University of York and the Marine Conservation Society, attributes the sharp drop in numbers to overfishing. The study also examines declines in specific fish: Halibut have declined 500 times, haddock have decreased more than 100 times, and cod have diminished by 87 percent. The report concludes that advances in fishing technology are responsible for the drop in numbers.
