Reduced Meat Consumption
New study finds that factory farm investigations affect the meat industry.
September 19, 2010
A new study by livestock economists shows that media attention to animal welfare conditions causes people to reduce their meat consumption. The September 16 study conducted by Glynn Tonsor of Kansas State University and Nicole Olynk of Purdue University showed that media exposure given to animal agriculture reduces all types of meat consumption for up to six months following the report. The researchers found that the consumption of beef decreased in 2008 following the release of videos from a Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) cruelty investigation at Hallmark/Westland slaughterhouse in Chino, Calif.
