Ellen DeGeneres—vegan, animal-rights activist, and host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show—is joining the fight against seal hunting in Canada. DeGeneres has posted a call to action on her website, urging visitors and viewers to sign People For The Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA)’s petition to stop the hunt and end “one of the most atrocious and inhumane acts against animals allowed by any government.” Each year, tens of thousands of baby seals are killed on Canada’s shores, many of whom are less than three months old. The Canadian government set the quota for the 2011 seal-hunting season at 468,200 seals.
