The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) walked away from the 32nd annual Telly Awards with an award for the film Undercover at Smithfield, which exposed animal cruelty at a subsidiary of pork giant Smithfield Foods. The video detailed the inhumane gestation crates where pigs were housed, so small the pigs could not turn around for most of their lives. “This Telly Award underscores the importance of whistle-blowing investigations that the agribusiness industry is now trying to suppress with draconian legislative proposals,” says Mary Beth Sweetland, director of investigations on HSUS’ website.
