The College of Charleston has chosen Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals as its College Reads! selection for the year. Students and faculty are encouraged to read the book and it is incorporated into discussions, events, and syllabi throughout the academic term. CofC math professor Martin Jones, a vegan himself, has been advocating for the tome to be chosen for several years, and tells charlestoncitypaper.com that the book is so persuasive that some students have stopped reading it because they wanted to continue eating meat. Foer also spoke to the online news source, saying, “It’s so exciting … You get a lot of people coming to the book who wouldn’t have come to it otherwise.” Foer is visiting the campus today to discuss the book and issues surrounding factory farming.
