The Animal Legal Defense Fund and co-plaintiff The Regal Vegan, producer of a plant-based “faux gras,” have filed suit against Hudson Valley Foie Gras, disputing its claims as being “the humane choice” of the foie gras industry. ADLF asserts HVFG is violating federal law by “urging consumers to buy force-fed foie gras rather than cruelty-free products like The Regal Vegan’s.” Investigations into HVFG’s facilities uncovered dead ducks tossed nonchalantly into garbage cans, or lying alongside living ducks suffering from sores and other health issues. ADLF is also suing the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets, warning, “by not declaring that foie gras comes from diseased animals, the Department is putting consumer health at risk—and violating New York state laws.” ALDF previously filed a class-action lawsuit against Judy’s Eggs for alleging its eggs came from free-roaming hens.
