A new study released by Harvard Medical School’s Joslin Diabetes Center calls into question the long-held wisdom that sufferers of type 1 diabetes should watch their intake of carbohydrates. The study found that patients’ blood-sugar levels rose after they consumed meals high in fat, and needed more insulin. Type 1 diabetes is a genetic condition (as opposed to type 2 diabetes, which can be caused by diet), but according to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the benefits of a low-fat, plant-based diet might offer benefits to those who suffer from type 1 diabetes as well.
